ABØMV Merri Lakewood

Merri
ABØMV was licensed in December 1996 as KF4OAD
after watching ham radio operators in a Red Cross shelter she was staffing
during Hurricane Fran in North Carolina. The
contest bug hit her during her first weekend on HF. During the 1998
ARRL 10 meter contest she had a QSO with AEØQ.
After CW skeds on the air and flights across country, they were married
in 2000 and she became ABØMV. Merri enjoys SSB contests because,
after years of studying French and other languages, she loves foreign accents.
Her favorite contests are the JIDX, All Asia and NAQP. My dog Dante
loves SSB and CW.

K0GAS Connie Schaeffer - first licensed as KN0GAS in 1956, received
her Conditional license the next year, and the Advanced and Extra
Class licenses sometime in the 1980's. Back in the 1956 she won a
certificate in the Novice Roundup. Connie was active on the Ladies
Loaded Clothes Line Net in the '50's and '60's, participated in Field Day
regularly until they moved to Utah in 1973. They didn't like women
in their Club so she wasn't active those years. But she had a request
for the Utah YL contact before her license even arrived. Bob KJØG
retired in 1976 and they traveled for 4 years before returning home to
Montrose and building a house in a location selected for antennas.
Began doing DX and Contesting in about 1983 and, of course Field Day every
year. Also participated in the Ladies Only Net from 1981-2003. She
took over as net control in April 1995 when K0MA became a silent key.
She received the Top Gun award in 2000, the Japan International DX
contest plaque for first place - US Zone 4 all band phone
for the six years from 1991-1996, and a bunch of certifcates for
WPX, CQ160, ARRL DX, SS,as single OP and ARRL 10M (multi with KJØG).

Uncle Bethel P. Brown in KØUK's home town of Henderson,
Ky. first introduced him to ham radio. In 1960 with the advent of
the transistor in 1960 he received his novice license. He discovered
contesting by wanting to work DX especially on 40m SSB & CW. In 1973
he moved to Denver CO where the contesting bug bite hard. unning with the
Colorado Conspiracy Club he met W0UA, K0RF, W0UN, W0ZV, K0YK and K0TR.
These hams helped me to improve both his station and contest techniques.
Bill’s main mentor was K0KE Keith Errickson. He was most influential in
helping Bill hone his skills and encouraged him to compete against himself
not others. Bill mostly uses the LP power level due to pesky neighbors.
Bill was also one of many Grand Mesa Contestors and DX Society Presidents
& served various functions, trustee being the latest.

N4VI and his station are currently in a state of "chaos"! The

to do to get the house back in at least a state of "controlled chaos"!

Phil NØKE was first licensed as WN8TTN in

contesting after discovering that it was easier to work DX in a contest
situation and later loved the competition. Phil enjoys QRP and QRO &
VHF contesting and HF. He has equipment to operate from 160m thru
1.2 GHz plus 10 GHz. He has 35 states and 6 countries on 2m, and WAS, WAC
and 76 countries on 6m. On HF he has worked all but one of the current
DXCC countries (need VU4)--- 300 of these QRP also. His operating
is mostly done portable. Phil is fortunate to be one of only a handful
of Colorado hams that have worked Europe on 6m. Phil teaches skiing

Benjie is a retired Aerospace Engineer. He became a ham because
his father and uncle were hams and he used to hunt transmitters on ten
meters with his father when he was a child in North Platte back in the
50's. He got his license in 1978 (N6BLQ) so he could talk with his father
(K7NWC) everyday or at least every week until he died in 1984. Benjie enjoys
HF contesting very much and has only missed three field days since 1979,
two due to illness. One was a vacation where there weren't any ham rigs,
ha! He lived in San Diego for 15 years and did a lot of emergency
volunteer work, and was able to participate in the 1984 Olympics as a radio
communicator for the horse jumping events held in Del Mar. He likes

Ken WØETT started short wave listening by building regenerative
receivers as a teenager while his father was stationed at Wiesbaden AFB,
Germany in 1957. Ken got my novice license, KN8MTK in December, 1958.
Ken got the call WØETT when my parents moved to Littleton, Colorado
in 1961 and he transferred to the University of Denver. While in Peace
Corps in Brazil in '64-66, Ken did a little operating at his friend's QTH,
PY7CKQ. During a stint in Saigon, Vietnam with USAID Refugee and War Victims
Directorate from '68 - 72, he was back to SWLing since he couldn't get
a license. Ken got back to Colorado in 1974 and started contesting
at his father’s cabin in South Park. With a homemade 2wl 20m rhombic at
about 20' and 100w FT101z, he was having a good time DXing, handling traffic,
and getting into contests again. In 1979, Ken upon old 6m again
and became hooked on VHF. Using just 25 watts into a Ringo 6m vertical,
he worked 25 JAs on CW during the solar cycle peak. Wow! 6 meters has been
fun over the years with local ragchewing, contesting, working WAS in two
years, and 102 DX countries over 23 years. On 2m, Ken has 40 states confirmed
and over 150 grids towards VUCC. In 1997, Ken moved from Littleton
where he had a R-5 vertical for HF and a 7 elements on 6m to Parker, CO
where he has 5 acres worth of elbow room. Hooray! Ken put up two towers
and a bunch of HF and VHF antennas which accept the 100w from his trusty
IC756 quite well. Ken really enjoys DX contests sponsored by CQ WW and
ARRL. Ken also enjoys the NAQP, VHF, WPX, and 10m contests also very much.
