July 6th, 2002 Meeting Minutes
I really want to thank Gary and his xyl for there super Fine hospitality and
for all the members who came over especially from Denver and
Montrose..Getting to Vail at 10am can be a real task if you have to leave
real early..again thanks.
I didnt get a total head count but here are the folks I remember being at the
meeting
1. W0ETT, Ken
2. N0FCK, Bob
3. N0LER, June
4. K0GAS, Connie
5. KJ0G, Bob
6. N0KE, Phil
7. K0CL, Larry
8. WW1M, Bruce
9. N0HF, Dan
10. W0TM, Gary
11. K0UK, Bill
12. N0BRI, Sunshine who came and went Hi.
Now if I missed some one Please next time you see me..Just shoot me to get me
out of my misery Hi.
We started the meeting off with a review of the accomplishments made by GMCC
in the past year or so.
1. More membership than in the past. The club has just about doubled in size.
Over 30 members and growing.;
2. Increase in the number of new Top Gun Awards. This too has doubled in the
past year.
3. The ONLY Contest Club in the state of Colorado that is regularly ACTIVE in
MOST contest. This my friends is significant and very important to note to
prespective members. I wont linger too long on this but this is something
that WE all can be very proud of...Lets Keep it up.
4. We are seeing participation in other contest besides the Big DX bashes.
This too I think is significant because it is showing the diversity of the
membership. HF, UHF, VHF, Domestic, DX etc are all areas where we can have
fun contesting and by doing so we represent the Proud state of Colorado and
our Club.
5. GMCC has a Eastern Slope Branch that has brought new energy and ideas to
GMCC. I want to thank Merri and Glen, ABOMV and AEOQ for all their work and
Ken, W0ETT who along with others in our club really got the Branch going.
I want to stop here to say that GMCC has NEVER to my knowledge really had any
major participation in the Sprints..this last year we had participation and
we were noticed. Look at the last issue of NCJ.
=============================================================
In addition one of our new members, N2IC is competing in the WRTC this
weekend. This is the elite of the elite operators in the WORLD competing for
the World RadioSport Team Championship.
For our club to have one of its own competing at this level is just
outstanding. Our club has given a healthy donation for Steve and a tee shirt
that he is wearing proudly for GMCC.
So get on and work all the station you hear because one of them just might be
Steve N2IC and his partner K6LL Dave...
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
6. Stable Board of Directors with increase in the number of board members.
7. Newletter published via email
8. Tee Shirts for member to buy and wear.
This was a quick snap shoot of where were have been and how its going. The
future is a head and at this meeting we made some significant strides.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The second half of the meeting was spent discussing the future needs of GMCC.
1. Rotation of Officiers, just how we are going to do this. Discussion was
made relative to keeping the club from becoming to one person orientated. We
finally made a decision on the following.
The president title will be change to Chairmen of the Board. The club is
governed by a Board of Directors that are responsible to the active
membership. Our current President will become the Chairmen of the Board and
Vice President will be Vice Chairman. Sect/Treas, will remain the same, N0FCK
and N0LER Bob and June Nickels, East Slope branch board members, W0ETT, Ken
Anderson and AB0MV,Merri Crawford
Our current president is K0CL, Larry Gerbaz. Our current Vice President is
N0KE, Phil Kirchbaum. Both will remain in there positions but with a title
change. It was decided that all meetings in the future will be setup by the
Chairman of the Board and the Vice Chairman. This means that arrangements for
up coming meetings will be handled by our main leadership team.
In addition a new Board postion was made. N0HF, Dan Norman will become the
GMCC Website GateKeeper. He will work with W0TM Gary to post scores,
information about GMC and to fill in the blanks on the website that now
exist.
This I think is outstanding and I want to thank Dan for stepping up to the
plate for this. Its this type of particiption that we are getting that will
make the difference in just how much GMCC can do for its membership and for
Ham Radio as a whole. Thanks again Dan.
2.Dues for 2003 will remain the same. Thats $12 per year for a single, $18
for husband and wife and $1 for each child up to a max of $24 for a family
with that many ham kids...Children K through 12 grade will have voting
priviledges if they have a license.
It was moved and seconded that we authorize our Secretary/Treasurer to mail
out yearly reminder notices to all members.
Our dues are on a yearly renewal schedule. This makes it easy for new members
to come in at any point in time. They can pay to bring them up to a January
renewal and beyond if they wish.
Lastly Bill Brown, K0UK will remain as the Trustee and newletter publisher.
The above changes will do I think a lot to make our club stronger and more
durable and more responsive to the membership.
3. Discussed the upcoming Hamvention in Estes Park in 2003. We wanted to
thanks Greg Dunn, W0ZA for keeping us informed of the preparation for this.
Please plan on attending..More info on this in the future.
4. Meeting Schedule for 2003 will be the responsibiitiy of our Chairman and
Vice Chairman.
5. It was voted and seconded that we present to K0RF our first Station Owners
Award. This award will be present to Chuck once the details are worked out on
what will be on the plaque, Merri, ABOMV, Ken, W0ETT and Dan N0HF will get
that to me so we can have the plaque made up and sent to Merri to present to
Chuck.
This award will honor both members and non-members that are nominated by our
membership for there outstanding effort in promoting contesting on a multi
op basis or single op status. The idea for this was the brain child of Merri
AB0MV. We as a board and membership must thank her for this idea.
This is another example of how we as a club can honor those who have done
much for contesting and amateur radio.
6. Top Gun Award will remain the same but it was agreed that the
recommendation by N0ZA should be used.
It was proposed that each member keep his or her own records and submit them
at the time they reach the thresholds for the award. Submission will be to
N0ZA Dr. Ross Harrell. This can be done via email. Our system on Top Gun is a
trust system, this change will keep the accumulation stage in the members
hands. Similar to WAS, DXCC etc.
Our current threshold for Top Gun Award is 1Million contest points.
If anyone needs info on how this is set up.. Just drop,,me a note.
7. It was agreed that Leaflets for Ham Fest and for new membership is needed.
Merri and Glen, AB0MV and AE0Q have been the ones to make this up in the
past. Example of what has gone out were passed out just to give each person
attending the meeting a example. We hope Merri and Glen will continue to work
with our East Slope membership as the Activities Directors to attend ham fest
and other funtions that can give exposure for GMCC.
IF any member wishes to help in this area please contact, Merri, ABOMV, Ken
W0ETT or Dan N0HF.
These later points I am going to move through rather quickly, got to get
ready for IARU.
GMCC Picnic,, yes we want to have this at some times in the future, no
decision made.
Colorado QSO Party. yes we would like to do this but its going to have to be
one or two members that take this challange on.
Kids Activity, some discussion on how GMCC can help in getting new hams into
the hobby. Various ideas were tossed around but nothing concrete at this ti
me. Other than we need to continue to work with those organizations that are
promoting Ham Radio to the youth.
Field Day, GMCC member may want to do something on this in the future. No
real decisions was made.
=============================================================WELL MY FRIENDS
I HAVE 30 MINUTES TO GET THE COMPUTER READY FOR IARU. SO GOT TO GET WITH
IT..HOPE TO SEE YOU ON.
AGAIN THANKS TO THOSE WHO CAME AND TO OUR HOST, W0TM AND HIS LOVELY XYL.
CU AND 7'3'S GOD BLESS,
K0UK BILL BROWN

December 2001 GMCC Newsletter...
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all GMCC members and friends...A New Year is rapidly approaching. From all of us on the GMCC board, May this bring forth a better New Year for us all...

##########################Editorial:###################################

One of the many questions we receive from potential members are the following. Is there a need in Colorado for a contest club and what does a contest club do anyway??

Is there a need for a contest club and why. The answer to that is Yes and for many reasons. I will give some of my thoughts on this.

1. Energy. A club can and should generate energy from its many members. The membership has the ability to keep the bands alive with there activity. Be it small or large. This synergy helps to promote our hobby of amateur radio for the long and short haul.

2. Motivation. A club should be able to motivate its membership for on the air activities and helping others who want to get on the air. GMCC does this with its sponsorship of contest plaques and our own contest award programs. Plus our individual members who work with youth and other outreach activities. GMCC has and will continue to help organizations that further the hobby of amateur radio.

3. Information. The club should be a source of information regarding various aspects of contesting and local activities that pertain to amateur radio. This information comes from our membership who are connected to various other activities in amateur radio and the community. Whether its how to set up a computer for contest or RACES or members and friends are there to help..

4. Representation. The club is the whole of its parts. It represents each member as being a part of the whole. When we turn in our scores to the sponsor indicating our club as GMCC or GMCC/F. We are identifying with the whole. That whole is our proud State of Colorado...When we send our contest report in many contest, we are stating just what state we are from such as 599 Co in the 160mtr cw test. The continental divide should not divide us, it is the backbone that holds the state together.Nuff said.

What does a contest club do and what do I have to do. These two questions come virtually together. I think as you have read above you have a good idea as to what a contest club does. Essentially the club want to encourage each amateur to enjoy the fun, the competition, the energy that comes from contesting in amateur radio...This comes from getting on and being active in the area you feel most comfortable. Amateur radio has so, so many areas of interest...Do we encourage one area above the rest. No, please no. We want all to enjoy what ever aspect of the hobby you favor. Do I have to make meetings and do I have to turn in so many points to be a member. Yes, you should make as many meetings as possible. Under the ARRL rules, a member should make at least 2 meetings a year. We try to have as many meetings as possible giving the membership as much opportunity to meet
there fellow hams. We also as a board try to be as flexible as we can in having the various meetings...In order to comply with the ARRL rules for there contest participation 2 meetings a year is necessary. Does one have to make a certain score to be in the club. Certainly not. You do what you feel is appropriate for your time and situation. We just encourage you to get on...
Well I have bored you stiff but I thought it would be good to visit the questions we hear from perspective members...Nuff said. On to more news..
####################################################################
TOP GUN AWARDS.....I got a call from the Score Master N0ZA. We have at least two maybe three or more who are in line for the TOP GUN AWARD. W0ETT, Ken Anderson and his plaque is in the making as we speak. AE0Q, Glenn Pladsen, we are having the vendor start on his plaque next week... Now we think there are others out there that need to get there scores
submitted to N0ZA. You can do that via email. N0ZA email address is N0ZA@qwest.net. PLEASE don't
send Ross your whole contest log. That goes to the contest sponsor. He just needs your summary sheet or if you subscribe to 3830 reflector, use that same design to report your score...If you have been accumulating your own talley and have not submitted it via email. You may wish to mail it to N0ZA 2433 Bella Pago Drive, Grand Junction,Colo. 81503. We really would like to get as many Top Gun Awards out as possible...This means contesting as much as you can and getting the scores in to the sponsoring organization and to our Score Master...Remember to achieve the plaque you need to get 1million contest points. You can take as long as you want or do it with a few big efforts. Its your choice. As members achieve the 1million or other contest plateau's. We will get the plaques to you either via your Liaison for Front Range or at a club meeting. If not we will ship them directly to you...
If you have any questions on this Please feel free to email Ross or any board member or myself..UK ...

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Multi Op Operations and Score submission for Top Gun This question came from AE0Q and I think its worth repeating. Just how do we calculate our score from a Multi Op operation. First I think it important to note that the station owner doesn't have to be a
GMCC member station...We decided this because we felt it would hamstring many of our membership that operate at stations that are not GMCC members. It was also hoped that our members participation in GMCC would be a spark that would cause other to wish to join... To calculate a score.. Lets say the Multi Op station scores 5million points and we have 6 operators that operate..5 are members of GMCC and 1 isn't..We divide the 6 ops into the total score and each op gets 1/6th of the 5million...thus the GMCC member submits his 1/6th of the 5million...I think this makes it simple from that point on out..
We want to encourage the use of the bands, this seems to be the best method to encourage our members to participate whenever and wherever they can.. It is hoped that non members that associate with GMCC member will be add to the ranks as members over time.... If you have any questions on this drop me a email or the Score Master Ross Harrell....

####################################################################

November, 2001 NewsletterYou know I had a very interesting talk via 2mtrs with K0DU. His comments hit home. Do you guys and gals remember the days when you
listened to older hams talk about there medical problems. We thought of them as the Geritol Group..Guess what,"We is them now"..I really
feel it with having the stomach flu and passing a kidney stone at 2:30am Wednesday morning...But you know its those times that make you know you are capable of crying..Hi...Nuff said about the road to the old folks home. Now the rest of the story!!!!!!^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Minutes from the last meeting held near Vail at the QTH of W0TM, Gary Yantis..I want to thank Gary for opening his home to the meetingand allowing the group to tour his FB station...I also want to thank all who showed up that day,,,K0CL our Prez, W0ETT, Front Range Liasion, W0AH, and K0CL xyl...Sorry I wasnt able to make it...I was putting up a rotatable dummy load that is now on the ground.This meeting resulted in some changes and suggestions that I want us all to know. about..1. Dues for the upcoming year will be $12 single per year, $18 husband and wife.Children K through 12grade are $1.00 per year, if the child is
a ham they have voting priviledges if not a ham no voting priviledges. If a family has 6 or more kids that are members we will limit there dues to $24. There might be a mistake in the website on this. If so we will get it changed or we can leave it alone, let us know. You might ask why the
increase in dues..Several reasons..A. Cost are going up everywhere. The cost for the plaques and the number of new members qualifying for Top Gun plaques will be increasing..B. Ease of administration..It basically means $1.00 per month..Its alot easier to figure pro rating when a new member comes aboard..Thus, the members that bought in under the old structure wont see this till there expiration date.C. There are some events being planned in the future that will cost the club.
This is a good sagway to the next item.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2. Banners.. We are planning on having a couple of Banners made for GMCC and GMCC/Frontrange branch. These banners will be used
at a GMCC event or at a hamfest/swapfest so that GMCC will get necessary publicity to attract new members and retain current members.3.Picnic/Meeting..again this is in the planning stages. But the intent is to have a event that we can call our own..Where, many of the membership can get together for a eyeball and some fun..again this may take money to pull off.4. Colorado QSO party. AGAIN just in the planning stages but a event like this does take revenue to pull off and it hasnt been done in
quite awhile.5. Sponsorship of awards through the ARRL cost money and so far we as a club have donated one award. That was won by a club member.
More on this latter..But again funds are needed to keep this going. I think it fair to say we would like to extend this to other events if possible from a financial prespective.6. Meetings..This past year we had the highest number of meeting since the existence of GMCC. The board is going to be setting this up again
this year.Your comments about the number of meeting and content will be greatly appreciated..Please get in contact with a board member or your liaision
on the FrontRange..^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Front Range Liaison..The two Front Range Liaisons are:
AB0MV, Merri Crawford email address, ab0mv@ix.netcom.com and W0ETT Ken Anderson email address, W0ETT@cs.com. Please contact
either one regarding anyissues, concerns or matters for the club if your QTH is on the Front Range.By using your liaisons you will aide in keeping us all in the que.
GMCC and GMCC/F As was announced in the last newletter. GMCC now has a BRANCH on the FRONT RANGE..What does this mean to all club members..A number of items..1st "WE are all one club"..We all support the mission of the club which in general is to keep the bands active for now and into the future..Plus we want to have fun doing it..We are not a do or die at any cost contest club. We want the membership to have fun doing what they like to do. The club wants to encourage activity especially contesting and dxing and all other forms of radio communication..Plus encourage new and not so new hams to join in the fun..2nd it will increase the number of score entries and pride of accomplishment that we all can feel from seeing the Club do well in as many contest as we can By all accomplishing a little We can all accomplish a LOT...This means that all operators know that there entry means something to all of us regardless of how much or how small..Lastly we can do somethings for Colorado that hasn't been done in a while plus hopefully encourage more activity from all amateurs who live in or near Colorado....We encourage unity not division of our Ranks as Amateur Radio Operators... Thanks...************************************************************************************************
==============================================================September 22, 2001 Meeting of GMCC and GMCC/F at W0ETT qth.
Again thanks to Ken Anderson W0ETT, for inviting GMCC and GMCC/F to his home and qth. Much thanks goes to his entire family also!
We had I think a great meeting. There was a total of 13 hams who came for the meeting and the get together afterwards at Bennetts Barbeque.
The main order of discussion was the Branch of GMCC/FrontRange( thats what the / F stand for).
Bill Brown K0UK gave information on the history of GMCC. Main point, " we are all amateurs that operate from the Great STATE of COLORADO. We all have a common interest in keeping the bands active through contesting, dxing, operating in general. Plus increasing the number of active hams both young, not so young and old by encouraging liscensing of all interested persons. Our common interest in contesting, in all forms of ham radio, dxing, and general operating will help strengthen our respective County, State and our Nation as a whole, especially in these perlious times".
Merri Crawford, ABOMV, Laison for GMCC/F gave us a overview of how the idea of GMCC/F came about and its orgin from PVRC. Merri emphasized the importance of being a friendly club that is more inclusize rather than exclusize. Her experience with that aspect of contesting. As I call it the "contesting Family" is a element that GMCC/F want to continually encourage. That aspect of mutal respect and consideration and giving of ones self to help others is a major factor in all that GMCC and GMCC/F seeks to accomplish
W0ETT, Ken Anderson emphasized that GMCC and GMCC/F seeks all who are interested in these ideals. Makes no difference what aspect of amateur radio you enjoy. You will find friendly hams willing to help and encourage each to have fun with the hobby. GMCC and GMCC/F is not seeking to out do any other club or to take the place of any other club. GMCC/F seeks what is best for the hobby as a whole. What is best for each individual who is having fun with the hobby.
We did have a discussion regarding the name of the club. Some history was gone over regarding the medium club rules under ARRL. Specifically to the 175 mile radius rule.GMCC has had a long history since the 1980's utilizing the Vail as its center. Thusly GMCC has been covering both slopes. This was important to note since the name and the history do go together.
No formal vote was taken but I think that with the use of the branch and officers of the club coming from both sides of the Divide. A cohesive club organized around the goals mentioned before will have a positive effect for amateur radio as a whole. I think that all in attendance were in agreement..
I do want to mention that we had "W0ME" in attendance. Now you ask who is W0ME? That is Mat Ericson, the son of K0KE Keith Ericson. It was good to see Kieth my old friend, contest mentor and technical guru..But most importantly it was good to see his ( I hope I have this right), 13 year son. This is a prime example of how our hobby will continue. Its through our youth. That is the future of amateur radio and our country. For us, meaning all hams GMCC and GMCC/F members to encourage, motivate, and to ELMER new hams is really too important not to mention. I want to thank Mat and his father Keith for coming and I hope to soon hear that Mat is working on this liscense and hopfully to hear him on from his father fine station.
Lastly we had a super presentation by another old frined, W0JEJ, Jack Johanson. Jack is a excellent tower installer and climber. His presentation was very imformative and stimulating for all. Jack gave us a view of how important it is to keep safety as the prime mandate in tower climbing. Jack gave a very informative demostration of climbing equipment and its use.
It is interesting to note that Jack has been in this business just about the same amount of time that GMCC has been in existence. Thusly his level of expertise and experience in installing and climbing is nearly over 20 years.
GMCC and GMCC/F wishes to think Jack for taking time out of his busy schedule to meet with us . If you have need of Jacks expertise email him at W0JEJ@home.com or look up Colorado Tower Work in the phone directory.
from that point we retired to Bennetts Barbeque for lunch, where more informative converstation and dialogue was had by all.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Station Visit..Three board members where able to make it to two outstanding stations.
W0ETT Ken, N0KE, Phil and myself K0UK made it to KV0Q's superstation..It is interesting having been to Bill Johnsons station years, years ago before all the massive towers and antenna were put up. So coming back was a real pleasure for me.
Bill has assembled a outstanding station..I hope that my memory serves me righteously on this. But here goes..10mtrs I believe its a 4 stack with 7or8 elements per antenna. 15mtrs I beleive its a 3 or 4 stack with 6 or 7 elements per. 20mtrs a 2 stack of big yagi's 5 or 6 elements plus a 2 stack of 3 element yagis on 40 mtrs. 4 Sq. for 80 and 160. Bill station is top drawer and the antennas will make any avid contester or operator drowl...
Next we visited K0KE and "W0ME". Kieth and Mat gave us a tour that is to be remembered. Kieth has a fine station with stacked KT34XA and other yagis plus a 4 SQ. on 80mtrs.
Kieth showed us his super fine collection of older radios. This included Collins S LINE equipment and many other fine Collins transmitters and receivers. E.F Johnson, Globe Kings and some commerical equipment with amps and commerical transmitters. One of note was the orginal transmitter for KDKO AM which was on in years gone past..That was a Blast from the Past.
All in all it was a good day and I know the three of us had just a super time...
_______________________________________________________________________Ham and Swap Fest in Longmont.
To Merri Crawford AB0MV and Glen Pladsen AE0Q, the thanks from all GMCC and GMCC/F members for your efforts with the table.
Merri and Glen manned the table which had information on GMCC and GMCC/F and pictures of many GMCC/F members and friends.
Glenn had a laptop equipted with RUFZ a cw contesting program playing through some loudspeakers. That was a blast to try to concentrate copying cw at speed and type at the same time.. I dont do walking and chewing gum well together so it was a big challenge for yours truly.
Some notables that came by the table. W0CP, Walt Stinson Vice Director Rocky Mountain Division. Both Merri and I had a good time pulling on Walts ear for Low Power and QRP Multi Op categories in ARRL contest. Oh, by the way when I left Walt was in second place on the RUFZ program for speed and accuracy.
Steve London N2IC/0 came by and spoke to us. Steve is the ARRL Rocky Mountain Division Contest Advisory Committee Representative. Again we got a small chance to pull on his ear regarding the classes in ARRL contest.
In both conversations with Steve and Walt, it was clearly important for the amateur radio community to support ARRL as much as possible plus ham radio as a whole.
By the way when I left Steve N2IC/0 had the top score on RUFZ but he even mentioned another ham that he thought was there that could run up a bigger score.
Our thanks to all who came to the table and enjoyed the time had by all.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++New Board Members.
It is with great pleasure that I am announcing two new addtions to the GMCC and GMCC/F board.
Merri Crawford AB0MV is our first liaison for GMCC/F. Merri has been INSTRUMENTAL, in getting the GMCC/F off the ground. It was her information and effort that has allow GMCC to envision and move forward with participation from the FrontRange. Her contrubution to this effort has really made it possible.
Ken Anderson W0ETT is our second liaison with GMCC/F. Ken has also been very important in this effort. His contributions have been of great value. I know that his contiuned support both on and off the air will make GMCC/F a valuable asset to the ham community.
The GMCC board knows it will be a pleasure to work with our two new board members as we try to make GMCC and GMCC/F a club you can take pride in being a part of.
GMCC and GMCC/F are all one club under the GMCC banner for contest scores. This is due to GMCC longevity and historical established name in the club contest ranks.
GMCC/F will function in harmony with GMCC. GMCC mission statement and activities will function in unison with GMCC/F.
It is hoped that those in the amateur radio community on both the front range and western slope will pull together to improve amateur radio as a whole for contesters and all who enjoy ham radio.
It is a goal of the board to foster a sense of family and community for all who choose to be a part of GMCC and GMCC/F. With each of us doing a little a lot can be accomplished.
Please give Merri and Ken all the help you can in establishing the FrontRange branch. Please keep them in your prayer.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Tidbits from the Editor;
####################################################################
ARFY and Partners request. GMCC has supported the Amateur Radio for Youth efforts with monetary support. But ARFY is in need of physical help in several area's.
1. The noise problem is still a concern at the Math and Science Center at Columbus at New Emerson Elementry school. We need some volunteers to take this problem on and get it fixed. Please contact Bill Nesbitt KG0ZI 241-4833 or Bill Brown K0UK 245-8701 if you can help get on this problem.
2. Jerry K0DU has offered to sell ARFY one of his towers for $100. If they can get the noise problem solved at the Center they would like to replace the R8 vertical with a beam on the tower..The tower is missing nuts and bolts and we need manpower to put it up. We need GMCC volunteers to provide the missing parts and to help set the tower up. K0CL the Prez has volunteered to help. Can we get others. Please again contact Bill Nesbitt KG0ZI 241-4833 or Bill Brown K0UK 970-245-8701.
3. East Middle School is getting a Amateur Radio station together for its students. Several East Middle School students passed the Tech test and will be on the air shortly. Plus ARFY has a list of over 50 kids that are interested in getting their license. ARFY is in need of volunteers to help put up a R8 vertical as well as donation of radio equipment for their station. The donation is Tax Deductible. Contact KG0ZI Bill Nesbitt 241-4833 or Bill Brown K0UK 245-8701.
4. Closer ties to the Partners Program..The Partners organization is a great organization that helps match adult role models with "at risk youth". Currently there are over 100 kids waiting for Senior Partners in the Grand Valley of Grand Junction. Partners needs adults who can contribute time (only 3 hours a week is required) in helping a kid get over some of the rough spots in his life plus its a chance to introduce a kid to a great hobby at the same time. Please call Partners 245-5555 or KG0ZI Bill Nesbitt 241-4833 for more info.
5. Partners is due to lose their current Recreation Center by the end of the year (its is being demolished to make way for a hotel parking lot). Partners is currently trying to raise money for a replacement building($600,000) Currently there is a $30,000 donation from Bill and Sandy Nesbitt which requires a $30,000 match. Can we get the amateurs in GMCC and other clubs to make a donation to this very worth cause. All monies rasised by local hams will go toward the "Match Goal" that Bill and Sandy have established. A idea that has surfaced is a swap meet or some other organized event that can raise money for Partners. If you have any ideas or if you want to champion this please contact Bill Nesbitt see phone number below. Plus when the building is built hopefully there will be a amateur radio station included and volunteers will be needed. Lets see how we can as amateur radio ops help this very, very worthwhile cause. Please call Bill Nesbitt KG0ZI at 241-4833.
6. (VE testing dates are the first Saturday of each month. I believe its primary goal is to test the youth of the community however you can give Bill Nesbitt KG0ZI, 241-4833 a call to check it out....)
Date: Friday, July 27, 2001
Hello and PTL to all GMCC members and friends....Here is the news that I have
at this point
Last meeting was held on July 7th at K0UK home. Here are the following topics
that were discussed. There was a quite lively discussion regarding youth
involvement with amateur radio in general and how GMCC can help in keeping
the interest high to get the youth involved..Here are some of the ideas that
were discussed.
1. GMCC could offer a plaque to the GMCC member who gets the highest number
of youth licensed. This was a idea that needs to be refined. More discussion
in needed hopefully at the next GMCC meeting. Plus we do need a club champion
that will push this idea Let us know if you are interested..
2. Closer ties with other organizations that are involved with youth.
Specifically ARFY and possibly Partners. The Partners program was just a
idea..Specifically Carson Bell WA0RLX offered to be a laison between ARFY and
GMCC.
3. A contest devoted and designed for the youth. With GMCC as sponsor..Again
more work is needed on this type of idea and a champion for this idea.
4.There was a off shoot in discussion regarding CC&R or antenna restricitions
that effect both new hams and existing or established ham, youth hams...The
discussion are centered mainly on the problem and it effects on hams. Again
more discussion is needed to see how GMCC can help. All ideas are
appreciated. You can get them to me or to our board. Or better yet put it on
the GMCC reflector found on the website so all GMCC members, who have signed
up can help.
The following is a personal editors notes: All the above has a central
issue. That issue is communication between all parties. The better the
communication between each as individuals the better the communication is on
a whole..Once a problem is identified then moving to solve the problem is
easier..We can help each other by asking for and giving our aide.Also we
must be sensitive to how the message comes across. Sometimes its not what is
said but how its said..Nuff said
Discussion on State Wide view of GMCC.
I was really very proud and elated to announce that GMCC now has a laison
for the Eastern Slope/Front Range..That laison is Merri Crawford, AB0MV. Just
recently you should have received a email from me announcing this but I want
to make sure all GMCC and Friends know that Merri did volunteer for this
position. She did this with grace and humility. Thinking of others before
herself. Its this quality in her that will help GMCC be even more successful
in the future.
Just to let you know she has jumped in with both feet to invite many hams on
the eastern slope to be members of GMCC. Plus ,she has contacted a number of
other clubs and organizations to let them know that there is a club that is
interested in Contesting and keeping amateur radio alive with the youth and
existing hams.
It is very important that we support Merri in this effort...Your help and
your prayers are needed to keep Merri and all of us moving in the direction
that will keep Hamming alive. Nuff said..My thanks to Merri and to Glen for
all there hard work..PTL..UK
How can GMCC help our members. A idea that came up, was to get information
from each GMCC member on there specific area of expertise. This was a idea
that came from our discussion on how to get the youth involved and antenna
restrictions. Example..Lets say you want to put up some type of antenna but
you got no idea how to start on a tower or some other method of getting up
a antenna.. Just who do I ask for help. If GMCC had a registery of what
expertise is available from its club members. This would give our members
a added resource and for all our friends another reason why GMCC has added
value to there membership when they join..It so much fun to help others..
How would we set this up...Well its quite easy. Just drop me a email if you
are so moved to let us know your specific area of expertise. Is it in VHF
UHF, contesting, logging program, Amateur TV, antenna and tower installation
or even more professional areas. Again its on a voluntary basis..Dont feel
pressure to put your name in the ring. But if you do, be willing to Elmer a
ham in there specific area of need.
Another ideas is for the use of the website and specifically where we can get
the word out to our membership in case a member or friend has a question that
hopefully someone can help with...I think you get the idea, if not just email
me or drop a line on the website...http://WWW.W0TM.COM/GMC/
JUNE 2nd Meeting in Denver. This is really the fun part of being involved with amateur radio. That fun part is meeting the great and I mean GREAT folks that are associated with amateur radio. We met at the QTH of Don Weiss, K0FX and his lovely wife. We want to thank both of them for having us over. There hospitality was Tops. Those attending the meeting were as follows:
1. AB0MV- Merri Crawford-new member
2. AE0Q- Glen Pladsen-new member
3. K0FX- Don Weiss-member
3. N0KE- Phil Krichbaum-member Vice President of GMCC
5. W0ETT- Ken Anderson-member
4. W0AH- Doug Allen-member
7. W1XE- George Noyes, absentia. Hi.-Member
8. K0UK- Bill Brown-member-trustee
There were several other hams who wanted to make the meeting but couldn't due to other obligations. I thought it was a SUPER turn out. The energy generated by the group was Great. Thusly the plans are being laid for a branch of GMCC to start on the Eastern slope. Vice President Phil N0KE, the GMCC board and membership committed to helping getting the branch started on the east slope. This idea of a branch was put forth by Merri AB0MV due to her experience with the Potomac Valley Radio Club. They have several branches that are in their service area. Thusly it is hoped that GMCC can do the same. Since our center is located in Vail, Colo. This gives a 175mile circumference for most of the state of Colo.
We expounded on the mission statement of GMCC. That is to encourage the use of the bands through contesting in all forms and helping to encourage theyouth and all existing or potential amateurs to get licensed. To use the bands/ to keep them active. If we don't keep them active we could over time lose them.  This core group will put things together to get started on organizing the branch. Plus inviting potential members to the next meeting in the Denver area. This meeting will be on Sept. 22 at W0ETT qth or another designated location. We will email that info once it has been organized, and in enough time for you to make arrangements. Again it was a great turn out and time of sharing experiences with all. We will keep the membership abreast as we move forward.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NEXT Meeting, will be in Grand Junction on July7th. Please put it in your calendar. The meeting will be held at K0UK home again. That's 2909 Four Corners Drive. If you need directions please drop me an email or call me athome 970-245-8701 after 8pm to 9:30pm. I am saving time by not including directions in this newsletter. Most of all, plan on attending. Starting time will be about 10am and over by hopefully noon. PLAN on Attending. Call in Freq. 146.82 -600 sub tone of 107.2

ARFY- Amateur Radio For Youth. This is info and a request. I received the following from Bill Nesbitt KG0ZI. "I'm teaching a Techlicensing class this Summer at East Middle School(kids and their parentsonly). It will be held on Mondays during July,(July 2, 9, 16, 23) from 8:30am to 10:30am. We need volunteers to work "one on one" with the kids having trouble with some of the concepts. They are to call me if they are interested in helping". Bill Nesbittt's KG0ZI phone number is 970-241-4833. Donation of $100 has been made to ARFY by GMCC. It is being used for the Math and Science Center radio station. Also from Bill KG0ZI. "Here are some other things that the local radio clubs can help ARFY with:
1) Install a 2meter antenna at the Math and Science Center.
2) Install an ATV, and digital station at the Math and Science Center.
3) Assist with Tech licensing course this Summer for East MS kids. See previous info.
4) Help put the Center Station on the air for some of the upcoming youth events that occur on the weekend. This includes School Club Roundup that is usually the 2nd week in Feb. The station should at least be on the air on one of the days of the contest(Saturday for working people). Again contact Bill Nesbitt KG0ZI if you can assist. His phone number is 970-241-4833

As Porky Pig says, "THHHHattts ALLL Folks". If I missed anyone or anything Please don't hold it against me. I Ain't a professional and this is out of my comfort zone. But If I can do this you can get on and operate a contest or two. Field Day is coming up. Help out your respective local club. Again GMCC is not having a field day. If you want info on the Western Colorado Amateur Radio Club contact Bob Nickels at 970-858-0940. I know that the Montrose ARC is having one contact Ron KCØGKZ at 970-835-7838, or Bob Schaeffer, 970-249-1602. Plus the SKI Country ARC usually has a field day operation. Contact Larry Gerbaz K0CL, 970-963-3796. ARFY has a field day for the kids. ALL contact MUST go through KG0ZI Bill Nesbitt 970-241-4833 Give Bill a call for info. He is the person to call.
I do have one last thing to say, or best what I have learned. "When you think you are communicating. You had best check then re-check and then re-check again to make sure what you said is what they heard and what they heard is what you MEANT". I have fallen victim and been a none checker of my communications. I hope we all take heed. PTL and God Bless, Bill Brown Trustee.

May 26, 2001
Hello, my fellow GMC members. Its been a long week for me and I hope this weekend finds you on CW in the WPX contest. I have not had much time to really run some stations but I made a few licks here and there. What new in contesting? UP COMING: FIRST EAST SLOPE MEETING OF GRAND MESA CONTESTERS OF COLORADO. Up coming meeting is being held at the QTH of K0FX. June 2nd, 2001. Start time is 10am. This meeting well be more of a get to know as many that show up meeting. I am hoping that our Prez, K0CL will be present. It should be a very pleasant meeting. I have attached the directions to K0FX Don's qth. If you need more individualized directions, please email Don directly. We really hope to see you there and if you could let us know if you plan to attend. I think myself and maybe one other will be coming in from the west slope. PLEASE DON'T FORGET...
Interesting side notes from the Editor.
 1. Dayton Hamvention. From what I can read the Dayton hamvention was another success. With the many forums, exhibits and swap meet. To those who attended, please pass along your views of the Hamvention and what's new on the horizon for amateur radio. It was very interesting the view of the top FCC persons who attended the Hamvention, especially in enforcement. California seems to top the list of problems states. Although the number of problems existing on the air or declining. But still some of the questionable language and actions of some amateurs are giving the hobby a bad image. We should try to impose as much peer group pressure to change some of this when we hear it. I am not advocating bad mouthing of individuals on the air but we can find who they are and if they are in our immediate area. Maybe a phone call might help. Nuff said.
 2. Field day..It was the opinion from our last meeting that GMC was not going to have its own field day exercise. But we do encourage as many fellow GMC'ers to support a club or event station that maybe operating that weekend. If you are in the Grand Junction area I believe that two Field day operations will take place. Western Colorado Amateur Radio Club. Bob Nickels NØFCK GMCC secretary/ treasurer, is president and he can get you hooked up with that group. Also I believe the ARFY group maybe going out. I would suggest getting in contact with Dr. Denis Campbell AAØYX or Bill Nesbitt, KGØZI. I don't have any more information than that right now but all are GMC members or past members and there email addresses are on this mailing. Or give me a email and I will pass it along. Lets support Amateur Radio by being involved.
NØKE Phil is down in TI5 land. If you get on this weekend please try to find Phil to give him a QSO. Phil has been a active dx'er, contester, uhf/vhf and HF QRP operator for as long as I have know him. That's over 20 years now. His easy going manner both on the air and off is a real testimony to him as a person. Plus, he is turning into a real world traveler. Lets support Phil's efforts from TI5.
 KCØGKZ, Ron has volunteered to help maintain the website. Thanks Ron for your help and for Gary Yantis, WØTM who got the site up and going again. If you have ideas about the site. Please pass it along to Ron or Gary. Plus get on and sign up on the website. It really helps to do this as it makes it easy to pass information along to the membership.
Antenna season, right now. With the fine weather we have been having in the west its time to get started on that project. But please be careful. Especially around power lines. They are dangerous and not very forgiving. Well that's about all I have from here right now...
 Here is the email from Don on how to get to his place.
 Hi Bill- To get to my place, here's how it is: from C-470, go to Broadway Exit (forget number) go north (make a left) and go for about 3 - 4 miles to Arapahoe Road (you can make a right turn only (on the corner is a Chinese restaurant called Wangs Gourmet Food, go east on Arapahoe Road for 6 or 7 blocks till you get to Penrose Ct Penrose is an extension of Pearl St), make a right (your going south now) and go to the 6th or 7th house on the right, 6905 South Penrose Court. There will be an old junk dark gray pickup setting in the driveway. You might be able to see the tower if it's still up. Planning on taking it down soon so I can get the crank-up tower going. Not sure where the folks will be coming from but if they are local they should be able to get to Arapahoe Road. Hope your having a nice Sunday over there Bill and looking forward to the visit. Who do you think will be coming and about how many? Thanks for club info . . . God Bless, Don FX
Please if you plan on attending the June 2nd meeting in Denver, Please let me know. It would be good to get a head count. So, see you there and hope to hear you on this weekend. PTL and God Bless, Bill KØUK

Hello and PTL to all GMCC members and friends....Here is the news that I have
at this point
Last meeting was held on July 7th at K0UK home. Here are the following topics
that were discussed. There was a quite lively discussion regarding youth
involvement with amateur radio in general and how GMCC can help in keeping
the interest high to get the youth involved..Here are some of the ideas that
were discussed.
1. GMCC could offer a plaque to the GMCC member who gets the highest number
of youth licensed. This was a idea that needs to be refined. More discussion
in needed hopefully at the next GMCC meeting. Plus we do need a club champion
that will push this idea Let us know if you are interested..
2. Closer ties with other organizations that are involved with youth.
Specifically ARFY and possibly Partners. The Partners program was just a
idea..Specifically Carson Bell WA0RLX offered to be a laison between ARFY and

Hello and Hello. NO, I'm not dead yet but sometimes my body feels like it. Its called maturing.
You know, sometimes you feel as if you are in control and then you realize that you are just along for the ride. But what a grand ride it can be. Nuff of this stuff. Lets Get Down to it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FIRST, I must apologize to those members who are not on the membership list on the web site. I will get that corrected. This was an oversight on my part. If you are not on the list drop me an email. But first go to the web site at: http://www.w0tm.com/gmc/   Don't forget go to the web site and check out the roster. If you are not on the roster drop me a email. PLEASE CHECK IT OUT. Make sure you sign up for the email group also.
JUNE 2nd Meeting in Denver. This is really the fun part of being involved with amateur radio. That fun part is meeting the great and I mean GREAT folks that are associated with amateur radio. We met at the QTH of Don Weiss, K0FX and his lovely wife. We want to thank both of them for having us over. There hospitality was Tops. Those attending the meeting were as follows:
1. AB0MV- Merri Crawford-new member
2. AE0Q- Glen Pladsen-new member
3. K0FX- Don Weiss-member
3. N0KE- Phil Krichbaum-member Vice President of GMCC
5. W0ETT- Ken Anderson-member
4. W0AH- Doug Allen-member
7. W1XE- George Noyes, absentia. Hi.-Member
8. K0UK- Bill Brown-member-trustee
There were several other hams who wanted to make the meeting but couldn't due to other obligations. I thought it was a SUPER turn out. The energy generated by the group was Great. Thusly the plans are being laid for a branch of GMCC to start on the Eastern slope. Vice President Phil N0KE, the GMCC board and membership committed to helping getting the branch started on the east slope. This idea of a branch was put forth by Merri AB0MV due to her experience with the Potomac Valley Radio Club. They have several branches that are in their service area. Thusly it is hoped that GMCC can do the same. Since our center is located in Vail, Colo. This gives a 175mile circumference for most of the state of Colo.
We expounded on the mission statement of GMCC. That is to encourage the use of the bands through contesting in all forms and helping to encourage theyouth and all existing or potential amateurs to get licensed. To use the bands/ to keep them active. If we don't keep them active we could over time lose them.  This core group will put things together to get started on organizing the branch. Plus inviting potential members to the next meeting in the Denver area. This meeting will be on Sept. 22 at W0ETT qth or another designated location. We will email that info once it has been organized, and in enough time for you to make arrangements. Again it was a great turn out and time of sharing experiences with all. We will keep the membership abreast as we move forward.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
146.82 -600 sub tone of 107.2
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ARFY- Amateur Radio For Youth. This is info and a request. I received the following from Bill Nesbitt KG0ZI. "I'm teaching a Techlicensing class this Summer at East Middle School(kids and their parentsonly). It will be held on Mondays during July,(July 2, 9, 16, 23) from 8:30am to 10:30am. We need volunteers to work "one on one" with the kids having trouble with some of the concepts. They are to call me if they are interested in helping". Bill Nesbittt's KG0ZI phone number is 970-241-4833. Donation of $100 has been made to ARFY by GMCC. It is being used for the Math and Science Center radio station. Also from Bill KG0ZI. "Here are some other things that the local radio clubs can help ARFY with:
1) Install a 2meter antenna at the Math and Science Center.
2) Install an ATV, and digital station at the Math and Science Center.
3) Assist with Tech licensing course this Summer for East MS kids. See previous info.
4) Help put the Center Station on the air for some of the upcoming youth events that occur on the weekend. This includes School Club Roundup that is usually the 2nd week in Feb. The station should at least be on the air on one of the days of the contest(Saturday for working people). Again contact Bill Nesbitt KG0ZI if you can assist. His phone number is 970-241-4833
As Porky Pig says, "THHHHattts ALLL Folks". If I missed anyone or anything Please don't hold it against me. I Ain't a professional and this is out of my comfort zone. But If I can do this you can get on and operate a contest or two. Field Day is coming up. Help out your respective local club. Again GMCC is not having a field day. If you want info on the Western Colorado Amateur Radio Club contact Bob Nickels at 970-858-0940. I know that the Montrose ARC is having one contact Ron KCØGKZ at 970-835-7838, or Bob Schaeffer, 970-249-1602. Plus the SKI Country ARC usually has a field day operation. Contact Larry Gerbaz K0CL, 970-963-3796. ARFY has a field day for the kids. ALL contact MUST go through KG0ZI Bill Nesbitt 970-241-4833 Give Bill a call for info. He is the person to call.
I do have one last thing to say, or best what I have learned. "When you think you are communicating. You had best check then re-check and then re-check again to make sure what you said is what they heard and what they heard is what you MEANT". I have fallen victim and been a none checker of my communications. I hope we all take heed. PTL and God Bless, Bill Brown Trustee.
May 26, 2001
Hello, my fellow GMC members. Its been a long week for me and I hope this weekend finds you on CW in the WPX contest. I have not had much time to really run some stations but I made a few licks here and there. What new in contesting? UP COMING: FIRST EAST SLOPE MEETING OF GRAND MESA CONTESTERS OF COLORADO. Up coming meeting is being held at the QTH of K0FX. June 2nd, 2001. Start time is 10am. This meeting well be more of a get to know as many that show up meeting. I am hoping that our Prez, K0CL will be present. It should be a very pleasant meeting. I have attached the directions to K0FX Don's qth. If you need more individualized directions, please email Don directly. We really hope to see you there and if you could let us know if you plan to attend. I think myself and maybe one other will be coming in from the west slope. PLEASE DON'T FORGET...
Interesting side notes from the Editor.
 1. Dayton Hamvention. From what I can read the Dayton hamvention was another success. With the many forums, exhibits and swap meet. To those who attended, please pass along your views of the Hamvention and what's new on the horizon for amateur radio. It was very interesting the view of the top FCC persons who attended the Hamvention, especially in enforcement. California seems to top the list of problems states. Although the number of problems existing on the air or declining. But still some of the questionable language and actions of some amateurs are giving the hobby a bad image. We should try to impose as much peer group pressure to change some of this when we hear it. I am not advocating bad mouthing of individuals on the air but we can find who they are and if they are in our immediate area. Maybe a phone call might help. Nuff said.
 2. Field day..It was the opinion from our last meeting that GMC was not going to have its own field day exercise. But we do encourage as many fellow GMC'ers to support a club or event station that maybe operating that weekend. If you are in the Grand Junction area I believe that two Field day operations will take place. Western Colorado Amateur Radio Club. Bob Nickels NØFCK GMCC secretary/ treasurer, is president and he can get you hooked up with that group. Also I believe the ARFY group maybe going out. I would suggest getting in contact with Dr. Denis Campbell AAØYX or Bill Nesbitt, KGØZI. I don't have any more information than that right now but all are GMC members or past members and there email addresses are on this mailing. Or give me a email and I will pass it along. Lets support Amateur Radio by being involved.
NØKE Phil is down in TI5 land. If you get on this weekend please try to find Phil to give him a QSO. Phil has been a active dx'er, contester, uhf/vhf and HF QRP operator for as long as I have know him. That's over 20 years now. His easy going manner both on the air and off is a real testimony to him as a person. Plus, he is turning into a real world traveler. Lets support Phil's efforts from TI5.
 KCØGKZ, Ron has volunteered to help maintain the website. Thanks Ron for your help and for Gary Yantis, WØTM who got the site up and going again. If you have ideas about the site. Please pass it along to Ron or Gary. Plus get on and sign up on the website. It really helps to do this as it makes it easy to pass information along to the membership.
Antenna season, right now. With the fine weather we have been having in the west its time to get started on that project. But please be careful. Especially around power lines. They are dangerous and not very forgiving. Well that's about all I have from here right now...
 Here is the email from Don on how to get to his place.
 Hi Bill- To get to my place, here's how it is: from C-470, go to Broadway Exit (forget number) go north (make a left) and go for about 3 - 4 miles to Arapahoe Road (you can make a right turn only (on the corner is a Chinese restaurant called Wangs Gourmet Food, go east on Arapahoe Road for 6 or 7 blocks till you get to Penrose Ct Penrose is an extension of Pearl St), make a right (your going south now) and go to the 6th or 7th house on the right, 6905 South Penrose Court. There will be an old junk dark gray pickup setting in the driveway. You might be able to see the tower if it's still up. Planning on taking it down soon so I can get the crank-up tower going. Not sure where the folks will be coming from but if they are local they should be able to get to Arapahoe Road. Hope your having a nice Sunday over there Bill and looking forward to the visit. Who do you think will be coming and about how many? Thanks for club info . . . God Bless, Don FX
Please if you plan on attending the June 2nd meeting in Denver, Please let me know. It would be good to get a head count. So, see you there and hope to hear you on this weekend. PTL and God Bless, Bill KØUK
April, 2001
First a little history about the Top Gun Award. This was a brain child of KGØZI and myself. We thought that by having a club award program we could stimulate more contesting thus use of the bands. In addition we wanted the awards program to be more inclusive not exclusive. Inclusive in that it had built in incentives for the new ham just getting into contesting, for cw operation, uhf and vhf contesting, other contests in general and the young hams age wise. We used multipliers to the total scores to give that incentive. By doing this it was felt that the playing field would be leveled and more new and youthful contesters and cw ops,etc. would get on. Thus reducing the image of it being a exclusive program for the established stations and operators. This did not seem to work. It appeared that the system was too complicated and intricate for most hams to spend the time learning how to use it. Plus we did not see a rise in the number of young hams participating nor cw ops and etc..
Sadly to say the board eventually agreed and we now don't use that system. I personally think that it might not have totally been the system but maybe the lack of getting the plaques out in a timely fashion that contributed to the lack of enthusiasm by all concerned...For that we as a board stand accused and guilty as charged. However we are getting it done.. Late by some standards but neither the Less its getting done. (The standard used for the following was to the 1999 contest season. Points accumulated for the years of 1999 and 2000 will be total score with out multipliers. Those new winner going over 1 Million points will be awarded their plaques in this up coming year of 2001. The board reserves the right to either continue the program or not.) The board felt that this was a top priority to get the plaques out. We also had to live with in a budget thus the following... Please see the following members that have received their Plaques or its on the way to them. Please take a few minutes to send a congrats email or letter to each if possible.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~TOP GUN AWARD WINNERS
1. WØTM- Gary Yantis- 1st place- top score of over 33 million points
2. NØKE- Phil Krichbaum 2nd place - score of over 22 million points. Highest number of entries.
3. KGØZI- Bill Nesbitt-3rd place- score of over 9 million points
4. KJØG- Bob Schaeffer-4th place- score of over 8 million points
5. KØGAS- Connie Schaeffer-5th place- score of over 5 million points
6. NØZA- Ross Harrell- 6th place- score of over 4 million points
7. K9MWM- Bob Ludtke-7th place-score of over 3 million points
8. KIØJZ- Andrew Be- 8th place-score of over 2million points. Youngest award winner.
9. KØDU- Jerry Fleck-9th place -score of over 2 million points
10. KØSX- Steve Grewe-10th place-score of over 2 million points
It is hoped by most that this award will not be the last for current winners nor future winners...Thanks to all who are or will be contributing to the success of Ham radio as a whole and to the Grand Mesa Contesters and DX Society. Please remember that your dues and participation is at work in this.... Nuff Said, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, KØUK bill brown, trustee and online editor.
If I missed anyone on the email let me know by sending me their name and email address...thanks, UK

November, 2001 Newsletter

You know I had a very interesting talk via 2mtrs with K0DU. His comments hit

home..Do you guys and gals remember the days when you listened to older hams

talk about there medical problems..We thought of them as the Geritol

Group..Guess what,"We is them now"..I really feel it with having the stomach

flu and passing a kidney stone at 2:30am Wednesday morning...But you know its

those times that make you know you are capable of crying..Hi...Nuff said

about the road to the old folks home. Now the rest of the story!!!!!!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Minutes from the last meeting held near Vail at the QTH of

W0TM, Gary Yantis..I want to thank Gary for opening his home to the meeting

and allowing the group to tour his FB station...I also want to thank all who

showed up that day,,,K0CL our Prez, W0ETT, Front Range Liasion, W0AH, and

K0CL xyl...Sorry I wasnt able to make it...I was putting up a rotatable dummy

load that is now on the ground.

This meeting resulted in some changes and suggestions that I want us all to

know. about..

1. Dues for the upcoming year will be $12 single per year, $18 husband and

wife.Children K through 12grade are $1.00 per year, if the child is a ham

they have voting priviledges if not a ham no voting priviledges. If a family

has 6 or more kids that are members we will limit there dues to $24. There

might be a mistake in the website on this. If so we will get it changed or we

can leave it alone, let us know.

You might ask why the increase in dues..Several reasons..

A. Cost are going up everywhere. The cost for the plaques and the number of

new members qualifying for Top Gun plaques will be increasing..

B. Ease of administration..It basically means $1.00 per month..Its alot

easier to figure pro rating when a new member comes aboard..Thus, the members

that bought in under the old structure wont see this till there expiration

date.

C. There are some events being planned in the future that will cost the club.

This is a good sagway to the next item.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2. Banners.. We are planning on having a couple of Banners made for GMCC and
GMCC/Frontrange branch. These banners will be used at a GMCC event or at a
hamfest/swapfest so that GMCC will get necessary publicity to attract new
members and retain current members.
3.Picnic/Meeting..again this is in the planning stages. But the intent is to
have a event that we can call our own..Where, many of the membership can get
together for a eyeball and some fun..again this may take money to pull off.
4. Colorado QSO party. AGAIN just in the planning stages but a event like
this does take revenue to pull off and it hasnt been done in quite awhile.
5. Sponsorship of awards through the ARRL cost money and so far we as a club
have donated one award. That was won by a club member. More on this
latter..But again funds are needed to keep this going. I think it fair to say
we would like to extend this to other events if possible from a financial
prespective.
6. Meetings..This past year we had the highest number of meeting since the
existence of GMCC. The board is going to be setting this up again this year.
Your comments about the number of meeting and content will be greatly
appreciated..Please get in contact with a board member or your liaision on
the FrontRange..
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Front Range Liaison..The two Front Range Liaisons are
AB0MV, Merri Crawford email address, ab0mv@ix.netcom.com and W0ETT Ken
Anderson email address, W0ETT@cs.com. Please contact either one regarding any
issues, concerns or matters for the club if your QTH is on the Front Range.
By using your liaisons you will aide in keeping us all in the que.
####################################################################
TOP GUN AWARD PROGRAM
Please remember that to qualify for the above plaque you must submit you
score to our score keeper..Now how does the program work.. Its real
simple..Just operate the contest you desire and submit the score, the summary
sheet will do..Once you attain ONE MILLION CONTEST POINTS you will be
presented a very lovely plaque from GMCC. Then when you attain an additional
Ten Million Contest Points other awards will be awarded and so on. The next
bullet will give you info on how to submit your scores..
____________________________________________________________________________CO
NTEST SCORE SUBMISSION FOR TOP GUN AWARD__________
Please send all contest scores that have been submitted to the appropriate
sponsor for score accounting to N0ZA, Dr. Ross Harrell, email to
N0ZA@qwest.net
I would recommend you submit only your summary sheet to Ross for Top Gun
score accumulation. It will make his job much easier if you use the same
format that can be found on the 3830 Reflector.. I think most of the
membership are familiar with this site and how it functions..If you need to
submit to Ross via mail..Send him the summary sheet ONLY...address for mail
is 2433 Bella Pago Dr. GJ, Co. 81503 phone number is 970-242-1577 Please no
collect calls or postage forward letters. The whole system is a honor system
please dont abuse the priviledge..Nuff said.
is a relative new ham with lots of potential in the contest arena. I am sure
you will be seeing and hearing more form Nick as time goes on..
upgraded to General in 1976 as WB0NHA. He enjoyed cw, working WAS and traffic
Handling..He has operated FD with W0ETT at his palce in Fairplay. Co and was
introduced to contesting at Kens W0ETT place..He got married in the 80's and
old. Greg is a Elevator field tech. Greg looks forward to supporting GMCC/F
and MHDXA..
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++I just wanted to
say at this point, that it is so good to see our fellow hams supporting
various clubs. I think Greg is excellent example for all..Many of the GMCC
members support more than one club. The ulimate goal of all clubs I believe,
is to keep the bands active, alive,vital and looking forward to the future
for more fun for all..If we keep this goal in mind we will always have the
bands and opportunity to operate.
####################################################################IIf there
are new members that I didnt recognizem I sincerely apologize but Please let
me know.. I am giving you the info that I have at this time...If you know
someone who is interested in joining please contact one of the liasons for
the FrontRange or a board member..All info can be found on the website,
http://www.w0tm.com/gmc
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
GMCC and GMCC/F As was announced in the last newletter. GMCC now has a
BRANCH on the FRONT RANGE..What does this mean to all club members..A number
of items..1st "WE are all one club"..We all support the mission of the club
which in general is to keep the bands active for now and into the
future..Plus we want to have fun doing it..We are not a do or die at any cost
contest club. We want the membership to have fun doing what they like to do.
The club wants to encourage activity especially contesting and dxing and all
other forms of radio communication..Plus encourage new and not so new hams to
join in the fun..2nd it will increase the number of score entries and pride
of accomplishment that we all can feel from seeing the Club do well in as
many contest as we can By all accomplishing a little We can all accomplish a
LOT...This means that all operators know that there entry means something to
all of us regardless of how much or how small..Lastly we can do somethings
for Colorado that hasnt been done in a while plus hopefully encourage more
activity from all amateurs who live in or near Colorado....We encourage unity
not division of our Ranks as Amateur Radio Operators... Thanks...
I must say my thanks to several hams who have shown the true ham radio spirit for coming over 100 miles to help me get up my little antennas. ==============================================================September 22, 2001 Meeting of GMCC and GMCC/F at W0ETT qth.
Again thanks to Ken Anderson W0ETT, for inviting GMCC and GMCC/F to his home and qth. Much thanks goes to his entire family also!
We had I think a great meeting. There was a total of 13 hams who came for the meeting and the get together afterwards at Bennetts Barbeque.
The main order of discussion was the Branch of GMCC/FrontRange( thats what the / F stand for).
Bill Brown K0UK gave information on the history of GMCC. Main point, " we are all amateurs that operate from the Great STATE of COLORADO. We all have a common interest in keeping the bands active through contesting, dxing, operating in general. Plus increasing the number of active hams both young, not so young and old by encouraging liscensing of all interested persons. Our common interest in contesting, in all forms of ham radio, dxing, and general operating will help strengthen our respective County, State and our Nation as a whole, especially in these perlious times".
Merri Crawford, ABOMV, Laison for GMCC/F gave us a overview of how the idea of GMCC/F came about and its orgin from PVRC. Merri emphasized the importance of being a friendly club that is more inclusize rather than exclusize. Her experience with that aspect of contesting. As I call it the "contesting Family" is a element that GMCC/F want to continually encourage. That aspect of mutal respect and consideration and giving of ones self to help others is a major factor in all that GMCC and GMCC/F seeks to accomplish
W0ETT, Ken Anderson emphasized that GMCC and GMCC/F seeks all who are interested in these ideals. Makes no difference what aspect of amateur radio you enjoy. You will find friendly hams willing to help and encourage each to have fun with the hobby. GMCC and GMCC/F is not seeking to out do any other club or to take the place of any other club. GMCC/F seeks what is best for the hobby as a whole. What is best for each individual who is having fun with the hobby.
We did have a discussion regarding the name of the club. Some history was gone over regarding the medium club rules under ARRL. Specifically to the 175 mile radius rule.GMCC has had a long history since the 1980's utilizing the Vail as its center. Thusly GMCC has been covering both slopes. This was important to note since the name and the history do go together.
No formal vote was taken but I think that with the use of the branch and officers of the club coming from both sides of the Divide. A cohesive club organized around the goals mentioned before will have a positive effect for amateur radio as a whole. I think that all in attendance were in agreement..
I do want to mention that we had "W0ME" in attendance. Now you ask who is W0ME? That is Mat Ericson, the son of K0KE Keith Ericson. It was good to see Kieth my old friend, contest mentor and technical guru..But most importantly it was good to see his ( I hope I have this right), 13 year son. This is a prime example of how our hobby will continue. Its through our youth. That is the future of amateur radio and our country. For us, meaning all hams GMCC and GMCC/F members to encourage, motivate, and to ELMER new hams is really too important not to mention. I want to thank Mat and his father Keith for coming and I hope to soon hear that Mat is working on this liscense and hopfully to hear him on from his father fine station.
Lastly we had a super presentation by another old frined, W0JEJ, Jack Johanson. Jack is a excellent tower installer and climber. His presentation was very imformative and stimulating for all. Jack gave us a view of how important it is to keep safety as the prime mandate in tower climbing. Jack gave a very informative demostration of climbing equipment and its use.
It is interesting to note that Jack has been in this business just about the same amount of time that GMCC has been in existence. Thusly his level of expertise and experience in installing and climbing is nearly over 20 years.
GMCC and GMCC/F wishes to think Jack for taking time out of his busy schedule to meet with us . If you have need of Jacks expertise email him at W0JEJ@home.com or look up Colorado Tower Work in the phone directory.
from that point we retired to Bennetts Barbeque for lunch, where more informative converstation and dialogue was had by all.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Station Visit..Three board members where able to make it to two outstanding stations.
W0ETT Ken, N0KE, Phil and myself K0UK made it to KV0Q's superstation..It is interesting having been to Bill Johnsons station years, years ago before all the massive towers and antenna were put up. So coming back was a real pleasure for me.
Bill has assembled a outstanding station..I hope that my memory serves me righteously on this. But here goes..10mtrs I believe its a 4 stack with 7or8 elements per antenna. 15mtrs I beleive its a 3 or 4 stack with 6 or 7 elements per. 20mtrs a 2 stack of big yagi's 5 or 6 elements plus a 2 stack of 3 element yagis on 40 mtrs. 4 Sq. for 80 and 160. Bill station is top drawer and the antennas will make any avid contester or operator drowl...
Next we visited K0KE and "W0ME". Kieth and Mat gave us a tour that is to be remembered. Kieth has a fine station with stacked KT34XA and other yagis plus a 4 SQ. on 80mtrs.
Kieth showed us his super fine collection of older radios. This included Collins S LINE equipment and many other fine Collins transmitters and receivers. E.F Johnson, Globe Kings and some commerical equipment with amps and commerical transmitters. One of note was the orginal transmitter for KDKO AM which was on in years gone past..That was a Blast from the Past.
All in all it was a good day and I know the three of us had just a super time...
_______________________________________________________________________Ham and Swap Fest in Longmont.
To Merri Crawford AB0MV and Glen Pladsen AE0Q, the thanks from all GMCC and GMCC/F members for your efforts with the table.
Merri and Glen manned the table which had information on GMCC and GMCC/F and pictures of many GMCC/F members and friends.
Glenn had a laptop equipted with RUFZ a cw contesting program playing through some loudspeakers. That was a blast to try to concentrate copying cw at speed and type at the same time.. I dont do walking and chewing gum well together so it was a big challenge for yours truly.
Some notables that came by the table. W0CP, Walt Stinson Vice Director Rocky Mountain Division. Both Merri and I had a good time pulling on Walts ear for Low Power and QRP Multi Op categories in ARRL contest. Oh, by the way when I left Walt was in second place on the RUFZ program for speed and accuracy.
Steve London N2IC/0 came by and spoke to us. Steve is the ARRL Rocky Mountain Division Contest Advisory Committee Representative. Again we got a small chance to pull on his ear regarding the classes in ARRL contest.
In both conversations with Steve and Walt, it was clearly important for the amateur radio community to support ARRL as much as possible plus ham radio as a whole.
By the way when I left Steve N2IC/0 had the top score on RUFZ but he even mentioned another ham that he thought was there that could run up a bigger score.
Our thanks to all who came to the table and enjoyed the time had by all.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++New Board Members.
It is with great pleasure that I am announcing two new addtions to the GMCC and GMCC/F board.
Merri Crawford AB0MV is our first liaison for GMCC/F. Merri has been INSTRUMENTAL, in getting the GMCC/F off the ground. It was her information and effort that has allow GMCC to envision and move forward with participation from the FrontRange. Her contrubution to this effort has really made it possible.
Ken Anderson W0ETT is our second liaison with GMCC/F. Ken has also been very important in this effort. His contributions have been of great value. I know that his contiuned support both on and off the air will make GMCC/F a valuable asset to the ham community.
The GMCC board knows it will be a pleasure to work with our two new board members as we try to make GMCC and GMCC/F a club you can take pride in being a part of.
GMCC and GMCC/F are all one club under the GMCC banner for contest scores. This is due to GMCC longevity and historical established name in the club contest ranks.
GMCC/F will function in harmony with GMCC. GMCC mission statement and activities will function in unison with GMCC/F.
It is hoped that those in the amateur radio community on both the front range and western slope will pull together to improve amateur radio as a whole for contesters and all who enjoy ham radio.
It is a goal of the board to foster a sense of family and community for all who choose to be a part of GMCC and GMCC/F. With each of us doing a little a lot can be accomplished.
Please give Merri and Ken all the help you can in establishing the FrontRange branch. Please keep them in your prayer.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Tidbits from the Editor;
It is always a pleasure to get this information out. Please remember I am not a professional.. Just doing the best I can with what little I have to work with..If you spot mistake please let me know and if I forget something please let me know..
                                ####################################################################
ARFY and Partners request. GMCC has supported the Amateur Radio for Youth efforts with monetary support. But ARFY is in need of physical help in several area's.
1. The noise problem is still a concern at the Math and Science Center at Columbus at New Emerson Elementry school. We need some volunteers to take this problem on and get it fixed. Please contact Bill Nesbitt KG0ZI 241-4833 or Bill Brown K0UK 245-8701 if you can help get on this problem.
2. Jerry K0DU has offered to sell ARFY one of his towers for $100. If they can get the noise problem solved at the Center they would like to replace the R8 vertical with a beam on the tower..The tower is missing nuts and bolts and we need manpower to put it up. We need GMCC volunteers to provide the missing parts and to help set the tower up. K0CL the Prez has volunteered to help. Can we get others. Please again contact Bill Nesbitt KG0ZI 241-4833 or Bill Brown K0UK 970-245-8701.
3. East Middle School is getting a Amateur Radio station together for its students. Several East Middle School students passed the Tech test and will be on the air shortly. Plus ARFY has a list of over 50 kids that are interested in getting their license. ARFY is in need of volunteers to help put up a R8 vertical as well as donation of radio equipment for their station. The donation is Tax Deductible. Contact KG0ZI Bill Nesbitt 241-4833 or Bill Brown K0UK 245-8701.
4. Closer ties to the Partners Program..The Partners organization is a great organization that helps match adult role models with "at risk youth". Currently there are over 100 kids waiting for Senior Partners in the Grand Valley of Grand Junction. Partners needs adults who can contribute time (only 3 hours a week is required) in helping a kid get over some of the rough spots in his life plus its a chance to introduce a kid to a great hobby at the same time. Please call Partners 245-5555 or KG0ZI Bill Nesbitt 241-4833 for more info.
5. Partners is due to lose their current Recreation Center by the end of the year (its is being demolished to make way for a hotel parking lot). Partners is currently trying to raise money for a replacement building($600,000) Currently there is a $30,000 donation from Bill and Sandy Nesbitt which requires a $30,000 match. Can we get the amateurs in GMCC and other clubs to make a donation to this very worth cause. All monies rasised by local hams will go toward the "Match Goal" that Bill and Sandy have established. A idea that has surfaced is a swap meet or some other organized event that can raise money for Partners. If you have any ideas or if you want to champion this please contact Bill Nesbitt see phone number below. Plus when the building is built hopefully there will be a amateur radio station included and volunteers will be needed. Lets see how we can as amateur radio ops help this very, very worthwhile cause. Please call Bill Nesbitt KG0ZI at 241-4833.
6. (VE testing dates are the first Saturday of each month. I believe its primary goal is to test the youth of the community however you can give Bill Nesbitt KG0ZI, 241-4833 a call to check it out....)
Date: Friday, July 27, 2001
Hello and PTL to all GMCC members and friends....Here is the news that I have
at this point
Last meeting was held on July 7th at K0UK home. Here are the following topics
that were discussed. There was a quite lively discussion regarding youth
involvement with amateur radio in general and how GMCC can help in keeping
the interest high to get the youth involved..Here are some of the ideas that
were discussed.
1.  GMCC could offer a plaque to the GMCC member who gets the highest number
of youth licensed. This was a idea that needs to be refined. More discussion
in needed hopefully at the next GMCC meeting. Plus we do need a club champion
that will push this idea Let us know if you are interested..
2.  Closer ties with other organizations that are involved with youth.
Specifically ARFY and possibly Partners.  The Partners  program was just a
idea..Specifically Carson Bell WA0RLX offered to be a laison between ARFY and
GMCC.
3.  A contest devoted and designed for the youth. With GMCC as sponsor..Again
more work is needed on this type of idea and a champion for this idea.
4.There was a off shoot in discussion regarding CC&R or antenna restricitions
that effect both new hams and existing or established ham, youth hams...The
discussion are centered mainly on the problem and it effects on hams. Again
more discussion is needed to see how GMCC can help. All ideas are
appreciated. You can get them to me  or to our board. Or better yet put it on
the GMCC reflector found on the website so all GMCC members, who have signed
up can help.
The following is a personal editors notes:  All the above has a central
issue. That issue is communication between all parties.  The better the
communication between each as individuals the better the communication is on
a whole..Once a problem is identified then moving to solve the problem is
easier..We can help each other by asking for  and giving our aide.Also we
must be sensitive to how the message comes across. Sometimes its not what is
said but how its said..Nuff said
Discussion on State Wide view of GMCC.
  I was really very proud and elated to announce that GMCC now has a laison
for the Eastern Slope/Front Range..That laison is Merri Crawford, AB0MV. Just
recently you should have received a email from me announcing this but I want
to make sure all GMCC and Friends know that Merri did volunteer for this
position. She did this with grace and humility. Thinking of others before
herself. Its this quality in her that will help GMCC be even more successful
in the future.
Just to let you know she has jumped in with both feet to invite many hams on
the eastern slope to be members of GMCC. Plus ,she has contacted a number of
other clubs and organizations to let them know that there is a club that is
interested in Contesting and keeping amateur radio alive with the youth and
existing hams.
It is very important that we support Merri in this effort...Your help and
your prayers are needed to keep Merri and all of us moving in the direction
that will keep Hamming alive. Nuff said..My thanks to Merri and to Glen for
all there hard work..PTL..UK
How can GMCC help our members. A idea that came up, was to get information
from each GMCC member on there specific area of expertise.  This was a idea
that came from our discussion on how to get the youth involved and antenna
restrictions. Example..Lets say you want to put up some type of antenna but
you got no idea how to start on a tower or some other method of getting up
a antenna.. Just who do I ask for help. If GMCC had a registery of what
expertise is available from its club members. This would  give our members
a added resource and for all our friends another reason why GMCC has added
value to there membership when they join..It so much fun to help others..
How would we set this up...Well its quite easy. Just drop me a email if you
are so moved to let us know your specific area of expertise. Is it in VHF
UHF, contesting, logging program, Amateur TV, antenna and tower installation
or even more professional areas. Again its on a voluntary basis..Dont feel
pressure to put your name in the ring. But if you do, be willing to Elmer a
ham in there specific area of need.
Another ideas is for the use of the website and specifically where we can get
the word out to our membership in case a member or friend has a question that
hopefully someone can help with...I think you get the idea, if not just email
me or drop a line on the website...http://WWW.W0TM.COM/GMC/
Big Big Big announcement. New TOP GUN Score Guru... N0ZA,
Dr. Ross Harrell has offered and I sure took him up on this,is taking over
the position of keeping track of TOP GUN Points. Just to refresh everyone memory
about this...The GMCC has a awards program going..Its called TOP GUN. How does
one qualify for this award? You MUST be a GMCC member FIRST..You must send in
your summary sheet to N0ZA. He will keep the scores for the club.  But remember
its your ultimate responsiblity to keep you summary sheets for verification
that you have reached the thresholds. Just what is the Threshold..Its 1million
contest points..What are contest points. If you operate any  contest and turn
in a score to the sponsor you can send us a copy of your summary sheet and those
point will go toward you being awarded a very nice TOP GUN Plaque.
Now what about those who have already won a plaque. Yes, there is more.  For
every 10million points above the 1million you will receive additional
awards.Now I am not going into all area but this should be enough to get your
interest started. How do I get my summary sheet to Ross N0ZA?  The easiest way
is via the internet..Especially if you post your score on 3830 reflector..That way you
get it to GMCC and its give GMCC a plug on that score reflector..N0ZA email
address is  N0ZA@qwest.net or give him a call at 970-242-1577. Ross would
appreicate you emailing first...Please..Plus he has the scores acculumated
from all the ones that were sent to me...Hi...Please email Ross and thank him for helping
GMCC do this and your prayers are much appreciated also...Nuff said.
PARTY, BARBEQUE, FUN GET TOGETHER, SEE SOME BIG ANTENNA'S/STATION, MEET OTHER GMCC
MEMBERS, ....
I got a call from K0DU Jerry Fleck who lives at 480 16.5 Rd on  Glade Park.
Glade Park is above the Colorado Monument that is just and I mean just a few
miles west of Grand Junction..That on Sept.16,2001 he and his Lovely XYL
Chris, KC0DKX will host a fun get together..It will start about 2pm and last
until ???.usually a resonable hour.
You will need to bring folding chairs and your own place setting plus a side
Hello and Hello. NO, I'm not dead yet but sometimes my body feels like it. Its called maturing.
You know, sometimes you feel as if you are in control and then you realize that you are just along for the ride.  But what a grand ride it can be.  Nuff of this stuff. Lets Get Down to it.
FIRST, I must apologize to those members who are not on the membership list on the web site. I will get that corrected. This was an oversight on my part. If you are not on the list drop me an email. But first go to the web site  at: http://www.w0tm.com/gmc/   Don't forget go to the web site and check out the roster. If you are not on the roster drop me a email. PLEASE CHECK IT OUT. JUNE 2nd Meeting in Denver.  This is really the fun part of being involved with amateur radio.  That fun part is meeting the great and I mean GREAT folks that are associated with amateur radio. We met at the QTH of Don Weiss, K0FX and his lovely wife. We want to thank both of them for having us over. There hospitality was Tops. Those attending the meeting were as follows:
1. AB0MV- Merri Crawford-new member
2. AE0Q- Glen Pladsen-new member
3. K0FX- Don Weiss-member
3. N0KE- Phil Krichbaum-member Vice President of GMCC
5. W0ETT- Ken Anderson-member
4. W0AH- Doug Allen-member
7. W1XE- George Noyes, absentia. Hi.-Member
8. K0UK- Bill Brown-member-trustee
There were several other hams who wanted to make the meeting but couldn't due to other obligations. I thought it was a SUPER turn out.  The energy generated by the group was Great. Thusly the plans are being laid for a branch of GMCC to start on the Eastern slope. Vice President Phil N0KE, the GMCC board and membership committed to helping getting the branch started on the east slope. This idea of a branch was put forth by Merri AB0MV due to her experience with the Potomac Valley Radio Club. They have several branches that are in their service area. Thusly it is hoped that GMCC can do the same.  Since our center is located in Vail, Colo. This gives a 175mile circumference for most of the state of Colo.
We expounded on the mission statement of GMCC.  That is to encourage the use of the bands through contesting in all forms and helping to encourage theyouth and all existing or potential amateurs to get licensed. To use the bands/ to keep them active. If we don't keep them active we could over time lose them.  This core group will put things together to get started on organizing the branch. Plus inviting potential members to the next meeting in the Denver area.  This meeting will be on Sept. 22 at W0ETT qth or another designated location.  We will email that info once it has been organized, and in enough time for you to make arrangements. Again it was a great turn out and time of sharing experiences with all. We will keep the membership abreast as we move forward.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Date: Friday, July 27, 2001
The Partners program was just a
idea..Specifically Carson Bell WA0RLX offered to be a laison between ARFY and
GMCC.
3. A contest devoted and designed for the youth. With GMCC as sponsor..Again
more work is needed on this type of idea and a champion for this idea.
4.There was a off shoot in discussion regarding CC&R or antenna restricitions
that effect both new hams and existing or established ham, youth hams...The
discussion are centered mainly on the problem and it effects on hams. Again
more discussion is needed to see how GMCC can help. All ideas are
appreciated. You can get them to me or to our board. Or better yet put it on
the GMCC reflector found on the website so all GMCC members, who have signed
up can help.
The following is a personal editors notes: All the above has a central
issue. That issue is communication between all parties. The better the
communication between each as individuals the better the communication is on
a whole..Once a problem is identified then moving to solve the problem is
easier..We can help each other by asking for and giving our aide.Also we
must be sensitive to how the message comes across. Sometimes its not what is
said but how its said..Nuff said
Discussion on State Wide view of GMCC.
  I was really very proud and elated to announce that GMCC now has a laison
for the Eastern Slope/Front Range..That laison is Merri Crawford, AB0MV. Just
recently you should have received a email from me announcing this but I want
to make sure all GMCC and Friends know that Merri did volunteer for this
position. She did this with grace and humility. Thinking of others before
herself. Its this quality in her that will help GMCC be even more successful
in the future.

Just to let you know she has jumped in with both feet to invite many hams on
the eastern slope to be members of GMCC. Plus ,she has contacted a number of
other clubs and organizations to let them know that there is a club that is
interested in Contesting and keeping amateur radio alive with the youth and
existing hams.
It is very important that we support Merri in this effort...Your help and
your prayers are needed to keep Merri and all of us moving in the direction
that will keep Hamming alive. Nuff said..My thanks to Merri and to Glen for
all there hard work..PTL..UK
How can GMCC help our members. A idea that came up, was to get information
from each GMCC member on there specific area of expertise. This was a idea
that came from our discussion on how to get the youth involved and antenna
restrictions. Example..Lets say you want to put up some type of antenna but
you got no idea how to start on a tower or some other method of getting up
a antenna.. Just who do I ask for help. If GMCC had a registery of what
expertise is available from its club members. This would give our members
a added resource and for all our friends another reason why GMCC has added
value to there membership when they join..It so much fun to help others..
How would we set this up...Well its quite easy. Just drop me a email if you
are so moved to let us know your specific area of expertise. Is it in VHF
UHF, contesting, logging program, Amateur TV, antenna and tower installation
or even more professional areas. Again its on a voluntary basis..Dont feel
pressure to put your name in the ring. But if you do, be willing to Elmer a
ham in there specific area of need.
Another ideas is for the use of the website and specifically where we can get
the word out to our membership in case a member or friend has a question that
hopefully someone can help with...I think you get the idea, if not just email
me or drop a line on the website...http://WWW.W0TM.COM/GMC/
Big Big Big announcement. New TOP GUN Score Guru... N0ZA,
Dr. Ross Harrell has offered and I sure took him up on this,is taking over
the position of keeping track of TOP GUN Points. Just to refresh everyone memory
about this...The GMCC has a awards program going..Its called TOP GUN. How does
one qualify for this award? You MUST be a GMCC member FIRST..You must send in
your summary sheet to N0ZA. He will keep the scores for the club. But remember
its your ultimate responsiblity to keep you summary sheets for verification
that you have reached the thresholds. Just what is the Threshold..Its 1million
contest points..What are contest points. If you operate any contest and turn
in a score to the sponsor you can send us a copy of your summary sheet and those
point will go toward you being awarded a very nice TOP GUN Plaque.
Now what about those who have already won a plaque. Yes, there is more. For
every 10million points above the 1million you will receive additional
awards.Now I am not going into all area but this should be enough to get your
interest started. How do I get my summary sheet to Ross N0ZA? The easiest way
is via the internet..Especially if you post your score on 3830 reflector..That way you
get it to GMCC and its give GMCC a plug on that score reflector..N0ZA email
address is N0ZA@qwest.net or give him a call at 970-242-1577. Ross would
appreicate you emailing first...Please..Plus he has the scores acculumated
from all the ones that were sent to me...Hi...Please email Ross and thank him for helping
GMCC do this and your prayers are much appreciated also...Nuff said.
PARTY, BARBEQUE, FUN GET TOGETHER, SEE SOME BIG ANTENNA'S/STATION, MEET OTHER GMCC
MEMBERS, ....
I got a call from K0DU Jerry Fleck who lives at 480 16.5 Rd on Glade Park.
Glade Park is above the Colorado Monument that is just and I mean just a few
miles west of Grand Junction..That on Sept.16,2001 he and his Lovely XYL
Chris, KC0DKX will host a fun get together..It will start about 2pm and last
until ???.usually a resonable hour.
You will need to bring folding chairs and your own place setting plus a side
dish, salad or drinks. Jerry and Chris will supply the meats, bread and condiments.
Its going to be a fun affair for all, GMCC members and Friends..If you plan on attending I
would suggest dropping Jerry and Chris a email or give them a call at
970-255-7679, Jerry email address is K0DU@G.J.Net
Please put this on your calendar and plan on making it..For those who havent
made there 2 meeting for GMCC this will be classifised as a meeting because I
know our Board wont pass up the opportunity for free food..Hi. SEE YA There
or Be 4 SQUARE..
Youth Dues..Its was decided that for the Youth at our last

April, 2001

First a little history about the Top Gun Award. This was a brain child of KGØZI and myself. We thought that by having a club award program we could stimulate more contesting thus use of the bands. In addition we wanted the awards program to be more inclusive not exclusive. Inclusive in that it had built in incentives for the new ham just getting into contesting, for cw operation, uhf and vhf contesting, other contests in general and the young hams age wise. We used multipliers to the total scores to give that incentive. By doing this it was felt that the playing field would be leveled and more new and youthful contesters and cw ops,etc. would get on. Thus reducing the image of it being a exclusive program for the established stations and operators. This did not seem to work. It appeared that the system was too complicated and intricate for most hams to spend the time learning how to use it. Plus we did not see a rise in the number of young hams participating nor cw ops and etc..

Sadly to say the board eventually agreed and we now don't use that system. I personally think that it might not have totally been the system but maybe the lack of getting the plaques out in a timely fashion that contributed to the lack of enthusiasm by all concerned...For that we as a board stand accused and guilty as charged. However we are getting it done.. Late by some standards but neither the Less its getting done. (The standard used for the following was to the 1999 contest season. Points accumulated for the years of 1999 and 2000 will be total score with out multipliers. Those new winner going over 1 Million points will be awarded their plaques in this up coming year of 2001. The board reserves the right to either continue the program or not.) The board felt that this was a top priority to get the plaques out. We also had to live with in a budget thus the following... Please see the following members that have received their Plaques or its on the way to them. Please take a few minutes to send a congrats email or letter to each if possible.
